Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” – 1 Corinthians 15:33, NIV
Katie loved Facebook. She used it to follow some of her favorite brands including a few mommy blogs. Some of the bloggers could be humorous, but sometimes, their humor seemed snarky and even mean.
As time went on, Katie found herself saying unkind things more often. Sure, the remarks may have seemed funny to some people. But there was often a barb under them that could cut deeply.
When Katie realized this, she decided to unfollow the brands that promoted mean or unkind language to others. “I realized I was absorbing all of that negativity and letting it affect my life and my words.”
Social media can be a wonderful way to find encouraging, positive content that helps you. But it’s a double-edged sword. Just as there’s positive content, there’s also no shortage of negative content, too.
Why not do a deep clean of your social media this week? Go through the different networks and remove brands and people who are unkind. Attitudes are contagious, and that means it’s important to be intentional about the content you’re consuming.
Lord, open my eyes to the people and brands I’m following. Show me if I need to remove an account or unfollow someone. Help me to surround myself with positive content moving forward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
