The Best Gifts

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father
of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” – James 1:17 (NIV)

Alice always struggled with what to get her husband, Mark, each year for his birthday and Christmas. She hated shopping, and she wasn’t sure how to express her love through gifts and treats.

Then Alice asked one of her friends for some ideas. The friend suggested learning more about what her husband valued and enjoyed from previous years.

So over dinner the next evening, Alice casually brought up the subject of Christmas. She asked her husband what his best Christmas was and why it was his favorite.

Mark paused for a moment. “The one with the snowstorm. We stayed in all day and watched movies together. I liked just spending the day together and hanging out.”

Alice realized that Mark’s love language was probably quality time. So, instead of trying to find him the latest techy gadget, she decided to spend the money on an experience they could have together.

When Mark’s birthday came up in June, they went whitewater rafting together. For their anniversary, she booked a stay at a quaint bed and breakfast an hour from their home.

Giving gifts is hard for some people. If you’re one of them, don’t stress yourself out. Instead, learn about the love language of the person you’re shopping for. This will make it easier to select the perfect gift.

God, You shower me with gifts daily. Just like You give good gifts, I want to give gifts to those I love, too. Please show me how to do that. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
