“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel,
which means ‘God with us’.” – Matthew 1:23, NIV

Devotional About Giving – Day 24

Devotional About Giving

Harper took a deep breath and let it out slowly as she stared up at the giant tube. She’d had a seizure earlier in the day, and her head had hit the asphalt hard. Her doctor didn’t think anything was wrong, but he’d ordered an MRI anyway.

The medical test involved putting Harper on a small bed and moving the bed into what looked like a small tunnel. The machine was loud, even with the earplugs. The noises made it hard for her to think.

Trying not to let herself worry about the narrow space, she started reciting the names of God to herself. Wonderful Counselor. Prince of Peace. Mighty God. Immanuel.

Harper paused. That name of God meant something special. Then she remembered her grandmother reading her the Christmas story when she was little. “Immanuel means God is with you wherever you are,” her grandmother had whispered as she wrapped Harper in a thick quilt and tucked her into bed.

The memory made Harper feel warm and safe again. It gave her a sense of peace and kept her calm until the test was over.

God, thank You for being with me always! Please let me live each day aware of Your presence and your unfailing love.
