Covenant of Peace

Today’s Verse

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you. – Isaiah 54:10, NIV

Sherry let out a deep breath when she looked at the imposing hospital building. She’d traveled all night to get to her parents. Her mother’s breathless call in the wee hours of the morning had roused her from a sound sleep.

She’d caught only a couple of words during their rushed conversation.

Heart attack. Surgery. Come now.

When Sherry hurried into the waiting room, she found her mother sipping coffee and watching the clock. She wrapped her arms around her mom, noticing how frail she suddenly seemed.

After her dad’s surgery was over, Sherry and her mom were allowed into the recovery room with him. Sherry sat at the end of his bed, sharing funny stories she remembered from her childhood.

She stayed at her father’s side, wanting to be there the moment her dad opened his eyes. In the middle of the night, she woke to a small sound. She listened for a moment before she realized her mom was singing old hymns while her dad squeezed her hand.

Even in the face of pain and uncertainty, you can find comfort in your Heavenly Father’s arms. He has made a covenant of peace that extends to all of His children.

Prayer

God, grant me peace when those I love are hurting. Show me how to encourage and strengthen those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
